News Release   October 5, 2015 Contact: aseidman@safariclub.org For Immediate Release   Hunters Win in Florida -- Judge Denies Motion to Stop Black Bear Hunt   Safari Club International was pleased to be the only hunting group to assist the State of Florida in protecting the state’s black bear season against a challenge from anti-hunters. On Thursday, October 1, 2015, after a five hour hearing, a Florida state court denied a request filed by Florida group, Speak Up Wekiva, to shut down Florida's first black bear hunt in decades. As a result of the ruling, the hunt is set to commence as planned on October 24th. Deserving most of the credit for the victory are Florida's state attorneys and biologists, who aggressively defended the hunt in court.   SCI assisted in defending the hunt by submitting a powerful amicus brief that explained to the court how stopping the hunt would harm SCI members and the general Florida hunting community. SCI’s brief also provided concrete data from SCI’s past involvement with black bear litigation in New Jersey. The data refuted the Plaintiffs' claims that the hunt would harm Florida's black bear population. An SCI attorney appeared at the hearing to offer assistance as needed. SCI’s local counsel in Florida, attorney Ethan Way – a member of SCI's Tallahassee Chapter – assisted SCI’s in-house litigation attorneys in filing our brief and appearing in court.   SCI is proud to be a part of this latest victory. SCI has a long history of conserving Florida black bears through sustainable use. Almost ten years ago, SCI helped the federal government defend a lawsuit seeking to force a listing of the Florida black bear under the Endangered Species Act, which would have prevented Florida’s current hunt. If anti-hunting groups decide to continue to try to stop the hunt, SCI will continue to help Florida defend against any challenge.                                                                                               * * * *   Safari Club International - First For Hunters is the leader in protecting the freedom to hunt and in promoting wildlife conservation worldwide. SCI's approximately 200 Chapters represent all 50 of the United States as well as 106 other countries. SCI's proactive leadership in a host of cooperative wildlife conservation, outdoor education and humanitarian programs, with the SCI Foundation and other conservation groups, research institutions and government agencies, empowers sportsmen to be contributing community members and participants in sound wildlife management and conservation.                  SHOT Show Triumphs 'Against All Odds,' Earns Gold 100 and Grand Awards   NEWTOWN, Conn.-The SHOT Show, owned by the National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), was honored with Gold 100 recognition and a Grand Award at the Trade Show Executive Gold 100 Awards and Summit in Santa Barbara, California, last week.   The awards signify that the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show) is among the Top 100 Trade Shows in the world and, for the Grand Award, that SHOT Show overcame great obstacles to achieve extraordinary success at its 2014 show, making it the perfect candidate in the Against All Odds category.   "We're honored to receive these awards," said Chris Dolnack, NSSF's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. "I can't imagine a better example of a trade show team rising to the occasion to overcome multiple challenges to put on a successful event than that shown by the SHOT Show team leading up to the 2014 show. It was a heroic, Mt. Everest-summit-like effort."   The show faced such steep odds because NSSF had ended its relationship with a longtime show management company following the 2013 show. That led to the necessity of developing a new show management team along with new contracts for its convention center facility, partner hotels, general service contractor and other vendors-no small task for the largest trade show of its kind in the world that attracts 67,000 attendees, 1600 exhibitors and more than 2,400 members of the media.   With about half a year to produce a huge trade show from scratch, NSSF and its new show management company, ConvExx, new marketing firm, CSG, and longtime partner Freeman not only accomplished the mission but produced one of the most successful SHOT Shows in history. Buyer attendance grew by eight percent over the previous year. On the exhibition show floor, it was another SHOT Show sell-out, and the post-show survey revealed exhibitor satisfaction as the highest rated ever.   "Truly, we excelled against all odds," said Dolnack. "There were those who said it couldn't be done, but SHOT Show has long set a high bar for excellence and that was our motivation. I could not be more proud of all who contributed to the effort with their unique talents. Of course, now we have to do it again for the 2016 show-and we will!"   About NSSFThe National Shooting Sports Foundation is the trade association for the firearms industry. Its mission is to promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports. Formed in 1961, NSSF has a membership of more than 12,000 manufacturers, distributors, firearms retailers, shooting ranges, sportsmen's organizations and publishers.                  10 Tips For Crossbow Success This Hunting Season   Are you toting a crossbow into the field this year? These 10 solid tips can give you the edge you need to find horizontal-bow success. Brad Fenson — September 16, 2015 10   Tips for Crossbow Success There are no shortcuts when it comes to hunting with a crossbow, and minding the details will ensure a freezer full of venison this season. A strong knowledge of the principles of archery and marksmanship will help you get the most out of your equipment and be successful under any conditions you may face in the crossbow woods.   Practice On 3-D Targets   Once you’ve got the sights/scope on your crossbow dialed in, it’s time to shoot some 3-D targets. Why? Whitetails don’t come with a target-shaped birthmark on their sides. Picking a small spot on a large body can be tough. You need to practice on a life-like target and imagine aiming at a single hair. In addition, it helps to review the anatomy of a whitetail deer. This way, during your practice sessions, you can look at your bolt impact and know if you got the heart, lungs, liver, etc.   Range Ahead   Save time and decrease movement in your stand or blind by knowing your range before a deer shows up. Use a rangefinder to confirm the distance to known objects in your shooting lanes, such as trees, rocks, flowers, grass or any natural features, and use them as reference points. Confirm the farthest distance you can shoot, and anything inside that zone is fair game.   Trigger Pull   There is nothing more critical to consistent arrow flight and accuracy than trigger pull. A slow, gentle squeeze on the trigger prevents you from pulling your bow off target when releasing an arrow. For best consistency use the center of the pad on your index finger and make sure you place the exact same spot on the trigger every time.   Focus Your Reticle   There is a quick trick for properly focusing the reticle in your crossbow scope – with or without the scope attached – and it takes less than a minute. Simply go outside, glance up and find a piece of blue sky totally clear of clouds. Turn the focus ring on the back of the scope all the way out. Lift the scope, point it at the sky and quickly look at it (no more than 3 seconds) to see if the reticle is in focus. Turn the focus ring one turn and repeat the quick look. Repeat this procedure until the reticle is in perfect focus as soon as you look at it. Then continue the exercise by turning the focus ring until the reticle is out of focus again. Then turn the focus ring back in the opposite direction until the reticle is clear, and you have bracketed the focus area and confirmed the correct dial position.   Make It Real   If you plan on hunting in layers of warm clothes – gloves, facemask, stocking cap – then conduct practice sessions wearing this type of apparel. The extra bulk and loss of mobility can drastically impair shot and arrow delivery. Rather than taking a chance, know exactly how your scope lines up from your shoulder while wearing these garments and whether you can find the reticle in your scope quickly. Most importantly, make sure you can still squeeze the trigger with your gloves on.   Check Limb Clearance   There is nothing worse than having one of your crossbow limbs come in contact with something. Treestands and blind setups are notorious for spoiling a hunt because hunters don’t run through their shots before the real thing happens. If you plan on shooting out of a blind, practice out of a blind. Make sure to try various angles to confirm you know how much clearance is required when you squeeze the trigger. The same goes for treestands.   Use A Rest   Shooting sticks and bipods are a great way to stabilize your bow on the front end. The extra support allows shooters to hold on target and reduces muscle fatigue, which causes accuracy-robbing shakes. Bipods mount directly to sling-swivel mounts on the bottom of the stock, but shooting sticks need to be field tested to ensure they don’t get in the way of limbs or strings. A trigger stick is quickly adjustable for height and provides a cradle to support the forestock of your crossbow but isn’t directly mounted to the crossbow.   Try Back Support   Supporting the butt-end of your stock is a great way to improve your accuracy. The good news: This isn’t hard to accomplish. The simple act of leaning into a tree with the shoulder that is supporting the bow will provide outstanding stability for improved accuracy. You can purchase field rests to support both the forearm and butt of a crossbow.   Practice The Mechanics   When shooting at the range or at targets in the backyard, it really doesn’t matter how much noise you make. However, if a mature white-tailed buck is standing a mere 20 yards away, you better know how to slowly and silently lift your bow, shoulder it for quick target acquisition and ready for the shot. It may all sound simple, but the mechanics are what typically foil a close-range shot.   Practice The Hold   How long can you hold your crossbow in the shooting position? If you start to shake after just a minute, your accuracy will suffer. To prevent fatigue make sure you watch your quarry over your scope and not with the reticle tracking every movement. Prolonged focus in a scope quickly leads to eye fatigue. Dropping your eye in line with your reticle seconds before a shot opportunity will ensure you focus on the reticle and deer at the same time, with little or no movement.

ZEISS Announces New Revolutionary Hunting binoculars -The VICTORY SF     NORTH CHESTERFIELD, VA., (September 9, 2015) - Carl Zeiss Sports Optics, the world's leading manufacturer of high performance sports optics, is pleased to announce the release of the new VICTORY SF binocular as the perfect complement to the VICTORY super-premium line of products. Next to the VICTORY HT, specialized for extremely low light, the VICTORY SF is the ultimate all-purpose binocular.   Offering the most brilliant images, the widest fields of view available combined with perfect ergonomics, it is ideal for all types of hunting.” said Mike Jensen, President of Carl Zeiss Sports Optics. “We are introducing an entirely new product design with a triple-link bridge. The ZEISS VICTORY SF is setting the new standard in optical performance and ergonomics.”   The core of the new ZEISS VICTORY SF is the Ultra-FL lens, designed to achieve new levels of resolution, brilliance and color reproduction. ZEISS engineers have developed a new, highly innovative optical system comprised of two fluoride lenses made with SCHOTT glass. The result is a spectacular and previously unimaginable viewing experience, full of brilliance and intricate details. The SF binoculars weigh in at just 27.5 ounces, extraordinarily light-weight for this type of optical performance. This allows for hours of fatigue-free viewing with the highest possible optical quality. In addition to this radical reduction in weight, the ZEISS VICTORY SF also introduces a new revolution in ergonomics: the Ergo-Balance concept. Unlike classic binoculars, the focal point of the lens is shifted further towards the back for comfortable viewing for extended periods of time. This is a product feature that hunters will definitely notice when using the VICTORY SF in the field.   The newly developed seven-lens eyepiece with ZEISS field flattener technology creates an extremely sharp image with extremely wide fields of view. The VICTORY SF 10x42 with 360 ft. field of view (FOV) and VICTORY SF 8x42 with 444 ft. (FOV) at 1000 yards are unmatched in their classes. In contrast to the traditional double-link bridge, the mechanics of the new ZEISS VICTORY SF were moved to the bridge above the focusing wheel. As a result, the focusing wheel is shifted towards the hand used to operate it for greater ergonomic benefits. There is also enough space to operate the focus wheel with gloves on in cold weather. This new position of the focusing wheel allows the hand to hold the binoculars in a very relaxed position for hours of fatigue-free viewing. The newly developed anti-slip tread on the focusing wheel improves the grip for quick focusing – even in wet conditions.   ZEISS engineers have integrated its Smart Focus concept into the VICTORY SF binoculars. Conventional binoculars require the focusing wheel to be turned 2.5 times in order to change from the close focus to the maximum observation distances. The VICTORY SF only requires the focus wheel to be turned 1.8 times, a distance that is 39% shorter. This makes it possible to focus more quickly and accurately – an ideal feature for quick and precise game observation.   The VICTORY SF binoculars are proudly manufactured at the Wetzlar production site, with the distinction of being “Made in Germany” and backed by an industry leading no fault / limited lifetime transferable warranty.   VICTORY SF 8x42: The 8x42 offers outstanding and fascinating high-contrast viewing. The 8x magnification creates an extremely large field of view, allowing for hours of viewing with unparalleled stability. With the widest field of view available these binoculars are the perfect companion when it comes to getting a quick overview of complex terrain.   VICTORY SF 10x42: The 10 x 42 allows outstanding viewing at great distances. The 10x magnification offers an unexpected level of precision and incredibly sharp details. The Ergo-Balance concept allows for easy, comfortable handling despite the higher magnification.   MSRP: VICTORY SF 8x42 $2,888.87 VICTORY SF 10x42 $2,944.43   Technical data:   About the ZEISS Group ZEISS is an international leader in the fields of optics and optoelectronics. •                  ZEISS Announces New Revolutionary Hunting binoculars -The VICTORY SF     NORTH CHESTERFIELD, VA., (September 9, 2015) - Carl Zeiss Sports Optics, the world's leading manufacturer of high performance sports optics, is pleased to announce the release of the new VICTORY SF binocular as the perfect complement to the VICTORY super-premium line of products.
