Key to a Successful Hunt: practice shooting positions by Mia Anstine One cause for a hunter or huntress to not succeed in harvesting their animal is lack of practice. In hunters education, they teach us the four basic shooting positions, but it seems when we go to the range we sit at the bench and "sight in". It is not often that you will find a shooting [...] Read more of this post

A man who became separated from his friends in dense forest during a squirrel hunting trip in western Tennessee says he ate worms and drank muddy water to survive five days in the wild before he was found. MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A man who became separated from his friends in dense forest during a squirrel hunting trip in western Tennessee says he ate worms and drank muddy water to survive five days in the wild before he was found. Bill Lawrence said he gathered rainwater in his hunting vest and tried to stay calm throughout his ordeal. Authorities say they conducted the longest search in decades in the 13,000-acre Meeman Shelby Forest State Park before the man was discovered Sunday. Lawrence lost sight of his two hunting buddies on Aug. 31 while chasing a squirrel and became alarmed when his shots were the only ones he could hear, The Commercial Appeal reported (http://bit.ly/pakvdz). "This is when I got turned around,'' said Lawrence, a corrections officer, adding he tried in vain to find his friends or their truck. At the time he became separated, Lawrence was clad in camouflage pants and jacket, a hat and snake boots. His friends reporting him as missing. Searchers used trained dogs, horses, all-terrain vehicles, boats, police vehicles and helicopters as they scoured the thick woods. Meanwhile, Lawrence kept walking, searching for food and water. "I was drinking muddy water ... eating worms. Yeah, I'd seen that on TV. I ate worms.'' Lawrence said he had a shotgun, 15 shells, 2 bottles of water, a flashlight, a can of bug spray, a squirrel call and a can of dipping tobacco. But he did not have a cell phone to summon help. He shot his gun whenever he thought he heard someone, but his shotgun shells ran out on Saturday. "Everything was against him from the very beginning,'' Park Manager Steve Smith said, noting the helicopter spotters had difficulty peering into the dense forest canopy and searchers were hampered by extreme heat. Messages left by The Associated Press at the park office for Smith were not immediately returned. A telephone listing for Lawrence couldn't be located. Lawrence eventually reached a road on Sunday. It was about three miles from where he started out, but Lawrence estimated that he had covered about 35 miles by then. Lawrence said he collapsed and was found by some passers-by. "Man I was happy,'' he said. "I laid down in that road and just sat there. ... By then I was just wore out.'' Authorities said Lawrence suffered from dehydration and severe insect bites. He was taking antibiotics because of the things he ate in the forest.

Organizer postpones big Pennsylvania gun show Yamiche Alcindor, @Yamiche, USA TODAY10:45p.m. EST January 24, 2013   (STORY HIGHLIGHTS) Reed Exhibitions plans to reschedule the event Glendale, Calif., may ban guns and gun shows on city property The region where the show was supposed to be will lose about $80 million in revenue A decision Thursday to postpone a large Pennsylvania gun show has sparked debate about whether such events are coming under fire in the wake of last month's Newtown, Conn., shooting massacre. Reed Exhibitions announced it was postponing the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, Pa., which had been scheduled for Feb. 2 to Feb. 10. The change came after Reed banned assault rifles at the show, prompting several exhibitors to boycott. "In the current climate, we felt that the presence of modern sporting rifles would distract from the theme of hunting and fishing, disrupting the broader experience of our guests," the company said in a statement. Reed Exhibitions plans to reschedule "as the national debate clarifies." The Pennsylvania postponement comes as Glendale, Calif., lawmakers consider passing an ordinance banning guns and gun shows on city property. Those efforts and others, made in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook school shootings that killed 26 people, may signify changing attitudes toward gun shows and gun possession, according to Tom Lorenz, a Glendale city spokesman. "Some City Council members and the police chief see it as a symbolic message that gun violence is not tolerated in our community," Lorenz said. Legislators recently asked the city attorney to draft the new gun law. The attorney now has four to six weeks to write an ordinance that would make it a misdemeanor to have or sell a gun on city property. Gun advocates argue that gun shows and gun rights will remain stronger than ever because of push-back by citizens eager to protect the second amendment. Other cities are talking about taking similar steps while some gun shows have postponed their events, Lorenz said. The region where the Pennsylvania show was supposed to take place will lose about $80 million in revenue, said Rick Dunlap, a spokesman for Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau. "This economic loss is collateral damage from a national debate," said Dunlap adding that local businesses rely on the show for first quarter earnings. Gun rights advocates argue that the president, congressional leaders, and gun control supporters are unfairly using the Newtown shooting to pressure organizations and the public into restricting guns. "An attack on one firearm is an attack on all," said Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, a non-profit legal defense organization based in Bellevue, Wash. "They are trying to pit one gun owner against another gun owner." Gene Hoffman, chairman of the Calguns Foundation, another gun advocacy group, said banning one of the most popular selling rifles in the world doesn't make sense. He and Gottlieb said they doubt future organizers will make attempts similar to Pennsylvania to curtail gun shows. "This is a strong warning to anyone throwing a gun show in America," Hoffman said. "You don't get to police what is legal and otherwise protected by the Constitution." I really hope more hunters from Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware join SeemeHunt and begin reporting on fishing, turkey hunting, deer hunting, duck and goose hunting throughout Delmarva and Jersey, if not on this group one of your own which points the outsdoor person to areas where they may be more successful on their outings. Not asking for your hot-spots or honey holes, just wildlife and fish movements, times of day where sight in general areas. This information would be deeply appreciated by the local hunters of this area. Thanks, happy hunting or fishing

How to Stay Tick Free This Spring by Melissa Bachman • April 24, 2012 •    Although turkey hunting may be one of my favorite hunts of the year, there is always a little bad with the good, and in this case it’s ticks! Not only do they completely invade my space, they can also be extremely dangerous; lyme disease is becoming an all too familiar problem among outdoor enthusiasts everywhere. I speak from first-hand experience when I say this season the ticks are out in full force. Just after completing a hunt in Kansas, the ticks seemed to be out of control, but I was ready for them. Each morning before heading out, I spray down my hunting clothes with a spray that has permethrin such as Sawyer’s Clothing Insect Repellant or Repel Clothing & Gear Insect Repellant. I completely spray my clothing down first, making sure to thoroughly spray my pants waistbands and socks. Then, I take Repel 100, which is 100-percent DEET, and spray down any exposed skin and around my ankles underneath my socks. This helps keep ticks, mosquitoes and chiggers off your skin so you can hunt in comfort and stay safe. This is the most concentrated insect repellent you can buy and works great if you plan to be outdoors for a long period of time. Just remember: If you get it on your hands, make sure to wash them before touching your mouth or eating. Regardless if you just hate the idea of ticks burrowing into your skin or you want to keep safe from lyme disease, these simple tips can be the best preventative medicine to keep you tick free this spring. How many of you have had serious run-ins with ticks this year?
